Whales, dolphins

What awaits us?
Whales and thousands of dolphins
August marks the peak of whale migration along South Africa’s east coast. Every day, we may encounter dozens of humpback whales and hundreds of dolphins. There’s also a chance to see killer whales, Bryde’s whales, and southern right whales.
Wild Coast
We’ll be based in the Wild Coast region on South Africa’s southeast coast. This remote area, far from major cities, is known for its picturesque coastline, featuring cliffs and rolling green hills. Mass tourism rarely reaches here, so the surroundings remain largely untouched, with minimal tourist infrastructure. We’ll stay in traditional Xhosa round houses — the Xhosa being a Bantu people — making the experience not only interesting but also highly authentic.
Who are we going with?
We will go to sea with the team of Steve Benjamin, a marine biologist, underwater photographer and long-time Team Trip partner. He has a long history of organizing swimming with marine mammals throughout South Africa and is involved in many conservation and scientific projects.
Itinerary
Day 1. Arrival in East London.
Meet and greet at East London Airport. Check in at the hotel. In the evening, enjoy a group dinner and get to know one another.
Day 2. Transfer to Mdumbi. Briefing
Transfer to Mdumbi (approximately 5 hours). Along the way, we’ll stop at a supermarket to make our final purchases before leaving civilization for the week. After check-in, a Team Trip guide will conduct a briefing and introduce you to the hotel’s facilities and Steve Benjamin’s team.

In the evening, equipment fitting before heading out to the ocean in the morning.
Days 3 - 8. Ocean excursions in search of cetaceans, sharks, sardines.
After breakfast, we’ll head out into the ocean for a full day in search of whales and dolphins. We may encounter a variety of species along the way. Whenever it’s safe, we’ll enter the water to snorkel and freedive (no scuba diving).

Lunch will be served on the boat. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a hearty dinner in good company.
Day 9. Flight back home
Last day of the trip. Departure home.

Day 1 / Meeting in Cape Town.
Meet at Cape Town Airport. Check in to the hotel and relax after your flight, followed by free time. Introductory briefing. If time permits, explore the ocean!
Welcome to South Africa’s second-largest — but most famous — city. Founded in 1652, it served as a staging post for Dutch ships traveling from Europe to India.

We are primarily interested, of course, not in the city itself, but in its natural surroundings!
Day 2 / Cape of Good Hope, penguins
Today we’ll aim to rise at dawn to visit the southeasternmost point of Africa, the famous Cape of Good Hope. On the way back, we’ll stop at the beach to swim and sunbathe alongside the penguins.
Technically, the Cape of Good Hope isn’t Africa’s southernmost point, despite popular belief. This common misconception arises because ships round this very cape when entering False Bay. It’s a stunningly picturesque spot, with soft white beaches alternating with sheer cliffs.
Day 3 /Safari in Aquila Game Reserve. Wine farm
In the morning, we’ll visit a winery near Cape Town. We’ll explore the vineyard and enjoy a tasting.

South Africa is a popular destination for wine lovers. The country traces the beginning of its winemaking history to February 2, 1659, when Jan van Riebeeck pressed his first wine. The idea was so successful that South African winemaking has flourished ever since.

Most of the grape varieties grown today are white, with Chenin Blanc being the most common, used for ordinary white table wines. But there’s also a unique and true national treasure: Pinotage. It produces both light and full-bodied red wines with a distinctive aroma of meadow grasses, prunes, and strawberries.

Next, we’ll go on safari in the private Aquila Park, where we’ll have the chance to see Africa’s Big Five and many other animals.

Day 4 / Table Mountain, central Cape Town
Let’s take the funicular up to the famous Table Mountain!

Table Mountain is recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is an iconic landmark of Cape Town. It rises 1,085 meters above sea level, and its silhouette is even depicted on the city’s flag. From a distance, the mountain’s flat surface resembles a table, which is how it got its name.

In Cape Town, we’ll visit the city’s most popular attractions: the Aquarium, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, and the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, known for its colorful houses and as the home of descendants of slaves from Southeast Asia. If time permits, we’ll also visit the Museum of Contemporary Art.

In the evening, if we have the energy, we’ll climb Lion’s Head to watch the sunset!
Day 5 / Flight home
Breakfast. Today we head to the airport for our flight home.
